Small-Group Safari in Kenya

When the sun sets over the Mara,
The world falls silent.

Rhinoceroses by the shore of a lake in the Rift Valley. The Maasai Mara at its quietest. Hippos from the boat and a volcanic gorge by bike. A real safari, during the Pilar long weekend.

Why in October?

When the crowds leave, Kenya is staying with you.

In the summer, the Mara fills up with vehicles following the migration. By mid-October, the large herds have usually returned to the Serengeti, and almost everyone leaves with them. What remains are the animals that live here year-round and a savanna with plenty of space for you.

Fewer vehicles

A lion, and no one else watching

Once the high season is over, the slopes empty out. When a lion appears, there’s no line of cars waiting their turn: you turn off the engine, and the moment is all yours.

The residents

Those Who Never Leave

Lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo live in the Mara year-round. Without the rush or the crowds, you can observe them as they deserve to be observed.

Felines

Eyes watching you from the grass

After the herds have passed through, the grass is short, and the big cats are easier to spot. And on the savanna, the first cubs are beginning to appear.

El Pilar

A Huge Trip Over a Bridge

You leave on Saturday the 9th and return on Saturday the 16th. With the holiday on the 12th, you'll only use up four days of vacation time.

A safari isn't a scheduled show. It's about setting out early, turning off the engine when no one's around, and letting the savanna take its course. In October, that happens much more often.

The Trip at a Glance

A single vehicle. The entire savanna lies ahead.

A Rift Valley lake, the Mara savanna, a freshwater lake, and a volcanic gorge. All in the same vehicle, with a Spanish-speaking guide and driver.

Masai Mara

Acacia trees, golden grass, and giraffes that take their time.

Two nights in the reserve · 1,510 km²

It’s an extension of the Serengeti in Kenya: the same plains, the same solitary acacia trees. In October, with fewer vehicles, life moves at a different pace.

It is a land of lions, cheetahs, elephants, and buffalo. Two days on the trails, from sunrise to sunset, with time to stop wherever you want and stay as long as you need.

Day 5 · Fresh Water in the Rift

Lake Naivasha

Stroll along the shore among zebras and wildebeests that barely lift their heads.

Boat Ride and Walking Tour of Crescent Island

After the Mara, the pace slows down. A boat among the papyrus, hippos peeking out, and fish eagles perched on the branches.

There are no large predators on Crescent Island, so you can walk among zebras, wildebeests, and giraffes. It's time to get out of the vehicle.

Day 6 · Volcanic Land

Volcanoes of the Rift

Leaning over the edge of a dormant volcano.

Hell’s Gate on Foot and by Bike · Longonot, 2–3-hour hike

On the last day of the safari, the group gets to choose. Hell’s Gate is explored on foot and by bike amid reddish rock walls, columns of steam, and zebras grazing alongside the trail.

Or you can climb Longonot, which hasn't erupted since the 1860s. From the rim, the crater is a dense forest, and the Rift Valley stretches out to the horizon.

Entrada a Kenia

Vacunas y salud

The group

When is the departure?

From Saturday, October 9, to Saturday, October 16, 2027. It coincides with the Pilar long weekend, so you'll only need four days of vacation.

Will we see the Great Migration?

Usually not. By mid-October, the large herds have typically returned to the Serengeti, and with them, many of the vehicles leave. In exchange, the Mara is much quieter, and the wildlife that lives in the reserve year-round is still there: lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo. If the migration is delayed one year, it will be a real treat.

What animals are usually seen?

In Nakuru, white and black rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, buffalo, and baboons. In the Mara, lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, topis, hippos, and, if you're lucky, leopards. In Naivasha, hippos and many birds.

Does it rain in October?

There may be a few showers, especially in the afternoon, because short rains begin in late October. They’re usually brief and leave the savanna clean and the dust settled. Bring a lightweight rain jacket.

Is it a long drive?

A few. The longest stretch is from Nakuru to the Mara, which takes several hours and includes stops along the way. The dirt roads are part of the safari experience: you often see animals along the way.

Do I need a visa?

You need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which you can apply for online before your flight at etakenya.go.ke. We can help you with the application process.

What vaccinations do I need?

Make an appointment at an International Vaccination Center 4–6 weeks in advance. The yellow fever vaccine is recommended and required if you are arriving from a high-risk country or have a long layover in one. For malaria, the doctor will determine whether prophylaxis is necessary.

What should I pack?

Clothing in neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive green), a fleece jacket for dawn safaris, a hat, sunscreen, binoculars, and a soft-sided bag instead of a hard-sided suitcase.

Why is the price in dollars?

Because in Kenya, safaris, parks, and accommodations are paid for in dollars. We set the price in that currency, and you pay in euros at the exchange rate on the day of each payment. Next to each price, you’ll find the approximate equivalent in euros.

What if I'm traveling alone?

It's very common. If you'd like, you can share a room with someone from the group; if you'd prefer a single room, the supplement is 230 $ (about 205 €).

Why does the price depend on the number of passengers?

Can you schedule it for other dates?
